MKTG 598 - CRN 30679 - Selling Yourself in a Tough Economy
Sales drive our economy. Without the exchange of goods and services, we would be at an economic standstill. What about selling ourselves? Getting a job? Running a company or non-profit? You can’t lead if you can’t sell, and you can’t sell if you can’t lead. This program will give you the tools to: learn how to inspire others, get others to follow your lead, write a check for your cause, hire you for a job, invest in your idea, or buy what you’re selling. Selling is a skill, not a personality. Successful leaders understand that selling is part of leading. This course will cover the consultative sales process, presentation skills, time management, leadership, negotiations, effective communications, and the protocol required to win. Why should you get hired? That’s what we’re going to find out!
MAJORS AND NON-MAJORS ENCOURAGED TO ENROLL. NO PERMISSION REQUIRED.

JOB SEARCH HELP FOR UNH ALUMNI
Finding help in looking for a job just got easier-and less expensive--for UNH alumni, including our new alumni who will graduate this week or in September. Alumni can now take the innovative and timely summer course How to Sell Yourself in a Tough Economy for only $35.00.
This course, which starts May 26th, will help people learn to use proven sales techniques to boost their chances of landing a job. Students will get one-on-one help with resumes, cover letters, presentation skills, time management, and negotiations skills. The course was developed by the Whittemore School's Department of Marketing faculty in collaboration with Catherine Blake, an internationally respected sales training living in Durham. Ms. Blake will teach the 10 week course which meets Tuesday and Thursday nights 5:30 - 7:30 in a recently renovated and air conditioned Kingsbury Hall classroom.
When this new summer was first announced it caught the attention of a number of alumni looking for jobs. However, its' cost quickly has proved to be an obstacle for many of those who need it the most. Like all 4 credit summer courses at UNH, the total cost (tuition and fees) for How to Sell Yourself is $1,277 for NH residents and $1,393 for non-residents.
Responding to the needs and challenges of its alumni, today the university announced a program which will allow UNH alumni to take the course for $35.00. Understanding how to better meet our alumni's needs was simply a matter of applying what we teach, said Peter Lane ('81), chair of the Department of Marketing at UNH's Whittemore School of Business and Economics. I looked at the course and asked two questions. 'What do the potential customers (alumni) most value in what we are offering?' They want knowledge, skills and help in finding a job. 'What do they least value?' The credit hours. So I suggested we separate the two and allow UNH alumni to audit the course for no credit which would lower the tuition to $400.
The concept quickly received strong support by UNH administrators. Dean Dan Innis of the Whittemore School not only approved of the idea but offered to provide a $400 scholarship to cover the audit tuition for every alumnus who registered for the course. The Registrar's Office at UNH agreed to waive the $98 summer services fee. Together this brings the cost of the course for UNH alumni down to $35.
